After winning the title of Miss Chinese Vancouver in 2004, Leanne went on to capture the crown for Miss Chinese International Pageant 2005. From there, her career in acting was taking off. During her recent return to Vancouver, Leanne showed support for the Pageant by sharing her experience with this year’s finalists. Although it has been 10 years, Leanne remarked with a smile that she still remembered her pageant days so vividly because her time at the pageant had brought so many wonderful changes into her life. When asked for tips for success in the pageant, Leanne replied that the secret is to be yourself, because only when you find your true self, will you be able to honestly confront any challenges in front of you and show off your confidence and charisma. Of course, hard work is crucial as well. Leanne remembered putting a big mirror in her garage and practicing her stage steps over and over. Besides, support from her family and friends was also important to allow her to fully concentrate on the competition. One of this year’s finalists who is less proficient in Cantonese asked Leanne on tips to learn the language within a short period of time, to which Leanne jokingly replied the best way is to find a Hong Kong boyfriend! In truth, Leanne put countless amounts of effort into practicing Cantonese, trying to speak the language as often as she could. When discussing the stress from the pageant, Leanne felt that support amongst the contestants was the best way to relieve any nervousness, and as a practicing Christian, Leanne also believed in prayers to bring her power. The finalists were very fortunate to have learned from Leanne, and be able to understand her changes within these 10 years from a contestant to the wonderful artiste she is today. TAIWANfest is not only a carnival, but also a great opportunity for local talents and overseas celebrities to exchange and exhibit their skills. The Champion of Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver Kaitlin was staged in this year’s TAIWANfest, where she demonstrated her cooking skills with Taiwan rice chef Mr Wang and pasta chef Mr Chen on stage in both Toronto and Vancouver. It was very enjoyable for audience to witness how the three talented chefs created this phenomenal feast.
Although Kaitlin accidentally cut her finger when preparing her dish in Toronto, she still stayed calm and continued to work on the Fusion soba appetizer. The two celebrity chefs even fought for being her assistant! Great compliments were given to Kaitlin’s innovative dish, pairing Chinese preserved egg with angel hair. With the home advantage and the support from fellow Junior Chef Kevin and his family, Kaitlin was even more energetic when making classic stuffed shells in Vancouver.
There is no boundary in delicious food. Nor is there a distinct taste in music. TAIWANfest specially presented “Vancouver- Symphony of Movies” which reinterpreted pieces originally written by internationally-acclaimed film director Ang Lee and Gerald Shih, and the soundtracks in Taiwanese movie “Cape No. 7”. At the Opening Ceremony, Claudia Jen, winner of “Super 10 Contest ‘14”, was invited to perform as a special guest. With aboriginal Taiwanese descent, Claudia greeted the audience in Taiwanese dialect, then went on to sing the song “Proud” on stage, earning a round of applause.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of TAIWANfest. As its long time partner, Fairchild Media Group was presented with a leaf-like certificate, adopted from the design by local Taiwanese artist Justina Yang, for all our support for the past 25 years.

Fairchild Television staff and artistes recently gathered in South Arm Park for the annual summer BBQ.
Everyone lent a helping hand to prepare variety of delicious BBQ treats and took turns to man the barbeque. President of Fairchild Media Group Joe Chan and Vice President Louis Tong even challenged Chef Corner Jr. Contestants to a cooking battle.
The highlight of the day was, of course, the lucky draw, earning lots of excitement amongst the crowd. Lastly, it was time for a Fairchild family group photo, ending off the day with fun and laughter.
The first ever Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver competition has brought a wave of excitement throughout the city. For the past two months, the 6 finalists, Clarissa, Jennifer, Kaitlin, Kevin, Mitchell, and Yuri have gone through a series of training under the mentorship of culinary experts in hopes to impress the judges. The four judges of the competition included Hong Kong Chef Corner Jr. mentor and judge, Christian Yang, gourmet foodie, Deborah Moore, local celebrity chef Alex Mok, and Head of Vancouver Community College Culinary Arts Department, Collin Gill.
Deborah Moore also acted as the MC for the competition as she first introduced the rules and regulations of the final competition. The junior chefs were required to create their own recipes for their final dish, with the main protein assigned to them from a selection of fish, chicken, or Sakura Farm Premium Pork . Besides, there other types of ingredients must also be included in their dish namely, locally produced and organic products and a superfood (high nutrient, low calorie foods), reflecting Vancouver’s green lifestyle. The finalists each had 60 minutes to complete their dish with two finalists challenging the same protein cooking at the same time. The judges then judged each dish under the criteria of taste, presentation, skill and execution, cleanliness and tidiness.
First up, confronted with the main ingredient of Sakura Farm Premium Pork , were Clarissa and Mitchell. As a Chinese-Vietnamese, Mitchell decided on a fragrant Vietnamese style lemongrass pork chop on broken rice. He named the dish S.P.I.L Chop, meaning Sense, Passion, Inspiration, Love. Mitchell used the “sous vide” cooking technique to treat his pork, first sealing the pork in a vacuum pack plastic bag, then cooking it in a warm water bath in order to preserve all of the pork’s rich flavors. Although Chef Alex admired Mitchell’s employment of an innovative cooking method, unfortunately, it typically takes a longer time to cook to its full affect.
Clarissa was the only finalist in the competition to adopt a Chinese approach for her dish. She created a beautiful sticky baby back pork ribs with mango salad presented on a bamboo platter, the simple yet beautiful presentation capturing Deborah‘s interest. Clarissa used fresh cucumbers as part of the garnish for her dish in order for the refreshing cucumbers to balance out with the richness of the pork. The judges commended Clarissa for her attention to details on each and every part of her dish.
Kevin and Jennifer were next up challenging fresh salmon as their main protein. Youngest in the competition, Kevin made seared and baked wild sockeye salmon with spaghetti and salad. Kevin even showed off his creativity by making an innovative ‘salad ball’. Collin expressed his admiration for Kevin’s excellent execution on the dish despite his young age.
For Jennifer, cooking a salmon dish was a great challenge because she is not fond of seafood and fish. However, Jennifer still put on a professional attitude and, leaving her personal likes and dislikes aside, wholeheartedly tried her best to cook a dish that brought out the best qualities of the salmon. In the end, Jennifer’s baked salmon with roasted potatoes was perfectly cooked, earning praise from the judges.
Last up were Yuri and Kaitlin with their chicken dishes. Although the two had vastly different cooking styles, both performed well, wrapping up the intense competition. Witty Yuri created a dish in which she wrapped chicken thigh with chicken breast, naming it ‘All Around the World’. This tricky dish had a very high level of difficulty. Yuri first cooked and shredded some chicken meat, then wrapped the meat in a thin chicken chop, making it spherical and finally fried the whole ball-shape finished product. Using 5 stovetops at the same time, not only did Yuri have to execute the main components of her dish, but her garnish as well. Racing against time, Yuri managed to complete her dish with just 10 seconds left on the clock. Christian complimented Yuri on her creativity and appreciated her willingness to step out of her comfort zone and put together such a difficult dish.
While Yuri was racing to complete her dish, on the other side, Kaitlin took to executing her Farm Yard Chicken Fricassee with a calm and steady attitude. This traditional French dish is known for being a dish used for examination in cooking schools as it requires a lot of skills to finely execute. Not only did Kaitlin cook the fricassee perfectly, but she also added a story component to her dish, making a farmyard chicken coop ‘fence’ out of crispy potatoes. Even culinary professor Collin commended Kaitlin for her skills and attention to details, pointing out Kaitlin’s talent despite her young age, likening her level of skills with adults that have been cooking for many more years than she.
Before announcing the winner, the judges presented each finalist with a graduation certificate to congratulate the 6 young chefs for their hard work in the past two months. After some discussions, MC announced the two finalists with the highest scores, Jennifer and Kaitlin, while Christian invited the two finalist’s mothers on stage to reveal the final result. Eventually, Kaitlin was selected as the first Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver Champion. The judges were amazed by Kaitlin’s level of culinary skills. Her Farm Yard Chicken Fricassee was a dish that transformed simple ingredients into a living work of art. Kaitlin will soon be flying to Hong Kong to represent Vancouver to participate in the upcoming season of Chef Corner Jr. and share her passion for cooking with the world.

Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver organized by Fairchild TV, in partnership with nowTV, Talentvision, Fairchild Radio, and PLEM Magazine, has brought the recent hype of Hong Kong Chef Corner Jr. right here in Vancouver, providing local young chefs with an unforgettable summer culinary adventure. After a series of challenging auditions and interviews, 6 talented children were selected to enter into the final competition. These 6 young chefs made their first official public appearance as finalists of Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver on July 24.
At the press conference, MC Mary Lo introduced the finalists in their chef uniforms custom-made in Hong Kong, including the graceful and kind Clarissa, shy and elegant Jennifer, youngest of the finalists and pianist Kevin, skilful Kaitlin, Chinese-Vietnamese mix Mitchell, and lively and bright Yuri. Although each contestant has his/her own distinct personality, they all share a heated passion for the culinary arts. Despite their young age, all are full of novel ideas. Fairchild TV invited gourmet foodie Deborah Moore, local celebrity chef Alex, and nutritionist Jojo to share with the finalists their insights at the competition. The finalists expressed that after having the privilege to train in the professional kitchen, graciously sponsored by Vancouver Community College, not only have their cooking skills improved, but they have also learnt valuable lessons in time management and control of their dish. Even more exciting was that the young chefs were able to experience the professional world of television, personally participating in a number of filming and photo shoots. The finalists also thanked the family members for their support throughout the competition, especially those who have been continuously tasting the dishes that the finalists have been practicing at home for the past month, providing them with comments and support in order to produce the best fine dining dish on the day of the competition.
The special premiere of Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver has brought a wave of excitement throughout the city. To boost it up even further, Fairchild TV has invited Hong Kong Chef Corner Jr. master chef Christian Yang to Vancouver to be a judge for the Final. Christian appeared at the Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver press conference to interact with local fans. Dubbed as a ‘magician’ of the culinary world, he won in 2011 the 5th place in the Asian Food Channel’s first Celebrity Chef Culinary Competition and debuted on television when hosting the third season of Chef Corner on now TV, and the second season Food and Culture on RTHK. Christian also appeared alongside with his mentor, Martin Yan, as a judge on Chef Corner Jr. With great anticipation, the 6 finalists were excited to finally meet the inspiring chef in person at the press conference. Christian commented that the young chefs looked even smaller than he imagined, but all carried the aura of ‘big’ chefs. Christian even quizzed the finalists on their culinary knowledge. With his funny questions and the finalists’ quick-witted answers, the press conference was concluded with a note of laughter and excitement.
Apart from Christian, Fairchild TV has also invited Deborah Moore, Chef Alex, and Department Head of Vancouver Community College’s Culinary Arts program, Colin Gill to be the judges of the final competition. Every year, rain or shine, Fairchild Media Group and its staff make sure to fully support the annual S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Charity Walkathon. This past July, President and Vice President of Fairchild Media Group, Joe Chan and Louis Tong, led employees of Fairchild TV and Fairchild Radio to Stanley Park to participate in the charity walk. Although the sky was drizzling with light rain throughout the day, and later turned to heavier rain just as the walk was about to begin, it did not stop the team’s determination to support charity and participate in the walk. This year, Miss Chinese Vancouver Jamie Gao and renowned host William Ho were invited to be the MC’s for the event with Super10 2013 and 2014 as performers on the main stage. First to perform was Super10 2013 Golden Voice Group winner, Theresa Liang. Following her solo, Theresa invited her fellow contestant Kris Tung and Super10 2014 2nd Runner Up Doris Cao onstage to perform ‘Dancing Street’. Next, Super10 2014 1st Runner Up Tony Cui and his good buddy, Lucky Luo put on a stunning performance of ‘Dilemma’. Lastly, Super10 2014 Champion, Claudia Jen lit up the stage with ‘Standing on High Ground’. The performance ended with an amazing group finale, boosting up the mood from the audience. Miss Chinese Vancouver 2014, Cindy Zhong and the 6 finalists of Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver also attended the event, showing support for charity. Fairchild TV also set up a game booth to provide fun games and prizes for both children and adults alike, bringing a happy conclusion to the successful event.
Aside from possessing extraordinary cooking talents, the Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver finalists must also learn the skills to shop for the best ingredients. Chef Alex and nutritionist Jojo brought the young chefs to the supermarket to show them how to select the best ingredients and share with them tips for a good shopping experience. The 6 finalists first visited the supermarket with Chef Alex to learn about the good qualities of each ingredient, understand how to select the best and freshest ingredient by examining its color, luster, density, shape, and aroma, and differentiate between various types of cuts of proteins. Jojo then led the young chefs to the farmers market to look at fresh, locally grown summer fruits and vegetables. Jojo educated the finalists on the nutritional value of fruits and introduced the organic and super foods to the young chefs in order to help them prepare for their menus at the Final. Under the shining sun and warm summer weather, the finalists all enjoyed a wonderful half-day of educational and fun shopping!
Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver, not only received the expert opinions from our partner, the Hong Kong nowTV judges when selecting the finalists, but the 6 contestants also had the chance to participate in a video conference with Hong Kong Chef Corner Jr. culinary coach, Ricky Cheung. Chef Ricky shared many tips with the finalists, including how to improve the recipes and perform under the pressure of the stage. Ricky also emphasized the importance of time management, pointing out that when the young chefs cook at home, they are free from any stress. But during the competition, nervousness, and pressure may cause panic and ultimately affect the quality of the dish. Ricky was surprised by their level of skills, stating that each of the young chefs’ specially designed final dishes is filled with care and meticulous planning. Ricky also expressed his excitement to meet the Champion in Hong Kong at the next Chef Corner Jr. filming.
Aside from the expert consultation from Ricky, Chef Corner Jr. judge Christian Yang will also fly from Hong Kong to judge for the final competition. Christian, who is known as a ‘culinary magician’, will be sharing his cooking experience and showing off his amazing skills during the Pre-show, taking place on Friday July 25th at 2:00pm in Aberdeen Centre. Fans, please do not miss out!
Long time residents of Vancouver, Pat Poon and Gigi Wong returned from Hong Kong recently, having been busy with drama filming and television hosting work. Pat shared that filming a drama for TVB again felt fresh and familiar although it had been a while since he made a screen appearance. Gigi Wong has just been awarded third place in the international category for the celebrated ‘2013 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards’. During the interview, aside from expressing her feelings on winning the prestigious award, Gigi also told the audience stories on her cooking class in Rome. Since Leisure Talk host Annabelle’s birthday was approaching, Fairchild staff specially prepared a birthday cake while Gigi and Pat sang the birthday song for her.
Continuing on with promotional activities, the 6 young chefs are now receiving professional culinary training in preparation for the final competition. In order to provide the best environment for the young chefs to learn, the Vancouver Community College has graciously lent their fully equipped kitchen for the training. Stepping into a professional kitchen for the first time, the junior chefs gave their best into the training as if it were the real competition. Their mentor Chef Alex, guided and taught the young chefs, first carefully going over each safety detail in the kitchen then meticulously demonstrating the proper way to cut various vegetables. Teaching along as he cooked, Chef Alex not only demonstrated cooking skills, but also gave the young chefs tips on food preparation, time management, grasping control of the dish and presentation. Cooking in a professional kitchen for the first time was a big step from the average household kitchen that the young chefs are used to. Each piece of kitchen equipment needed to be handled with extra care. With Chef Alex personally teaching each young chef, nervousness was sure to appear. Despite the pressuring environment, each junior chef handled the situation masterfully, showing off the professionalism that ought to be commended.
For this first season of Chef Corner Junior Vancouver, finalists must create their own menu for the competition. Aside from the protein portion of the dish, side dishes must also meet 3 major requirements: the ingredients must be locally produced, the dish must contain Super Foods (healthy, low calorie ingredients), and must represent Vancouver’s environmentally green lifestyle. To find out just how talented and creative these young chefs really are, tune in to Fairchild TV from now on until August 8th for the broadcast of Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver mini program aired every Monday to Friday at 8:55pm. Want to experience the wonder of these young chef’s talents even earlier? Don't miss out on Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver pre-show taking place live at Aberdeen Center on Friday July 25th at 2:00pm!
The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life was held at the Richmond Olympic Oval last week. Participants formed groups in the relay to raise funds for cancer research and patients battling the disease. Miss Chinese Vancouver Jamie Gao attended the event as an opening guest and, along with Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, presented the BC Relay for Life Spirit Award to the group that raised the most funds. To continue the MCV’s “care for the community” mission, Jamie also took part in the relay herself show support for the cause.
The Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver finalists recently participated at the filming of their television promotional videos, which brought along many different first time experiences. The 6 finalists received professional makeup and hair styling, and became the main characters in their own promos, a great excitement among the group. These energetic and lively kids when putting on their Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver uniforms immediately became professional and passionate young chefs. Each of them took it very seriously and stood in front of the blue screen while listening carefully to the producer's instructions. For these young finalists, entering the world of the grown-ups was fascinating. Not only were they able to learn about production, but they also opened up their eyes to new experiences. It is indeed a meaningful and fun summer vacation to remember.
After many rounds of tests and challenges, the final 6 young chefs of the very first Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver competition have been selected. They have just signed a contract under the agreement of their guardian and witness of a lawyer, officially starting this exciting culinary journey. The finalists first attended a meeting with the production crew to understand the upcoming chain of filming processes and events happening throughout the competition. Although young at age, they showed tremendous attention as they listened and wrote down every detail. The finalists also met with image director, Betty, to learn about the professional image that they should be upholding in the coming months. Aside from the on screen aspects, the contestants sat down with Chef Alex to discuss their ideas on their dishes for the final. As well, they are currently working hard on practicing and perfecting their culinary skills in order to produce the best fine dining dish ever in their lives on show day.
The lucky few aspiring chefs who passed the Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver preliminary interviews were confronted by an even greater challenge this weekend as they entered into the secondary auditions for the final competition. Two local popular food lovers, Chef Alex and nutritionist and gourmet foodie, JoJo were invited to be the judges for this special event.
The contestants made their entrance in pairs under the introduction of host, Leo. For this first round of cooking, the young chefs were allowed to select their own dish. Another challenge that the competitors had to face was time management. From prepping the ingredients, to cooking, to plating, each young chef was only given 30 minutes to complete every component. Although the contestants were just 11-13 years old, they all performed with great talent and each completed their dish within the time limit. Some of the dishes included lamb chop with couscous salad, seafood spaghetti, cheese and herb baked escargot, and cheese soufflé, reflecting an assortment of different cooking styles and cuisines. One contestant even managed to bake salmon, cook spaghetti, and make sauce at the same time! All the contestants demonstrated their cooking talent and balanced management skills and made delicious dishes while answering the judges’ questions all at once. After completing their dishes, the contestants were required to present their dishes in front of the camera. One contestant explained that she used sweet peppers to show off her technique because sweet peppers were easy to burn and required some tricks to cook well. Chef Alex and JoJo expressed their appreciation at each dish and the devotion of each contestant to planning, executing and plating their cooking. To see more of these delicious and appetizing dishes, please visit our Facebook page.
After this competition segment, the young chefs had to undergo a test on their chopping skills as well. Chef Alex first demonstrated how to accurately and safely cut a variety of vegetables as the children watched. Many of them were quick to pick up the correct method. However, accidents are bound to happen to kids while cooking. One contestant accidently cut the tip of his finger, but fortunately there was a paramedic standing by. Another contestant put a hot pan on top of a plastic tablemat, melting the mat by accident and yet another contestant forgot to taste their dish, causing the dish to be over seasoned.
After a full day of auditions, along with the professionalism of our expert judging team and advice from the Hong Kong nowTV Chef Corner judging team, 6 finalists were able to proceed to the next stage of the competition. They will put on their official Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver uniforms and go through a series of training in preparation for the Final in July. Please visit our website for updates on Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver!
The recently concluded interviews of Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver were met with extreme popularity. From the reception desk, to inside the studio, Fairchild TV was swarmed with groups of exciting applicants and their families. The crowd of interviewees aged 8-14 came from an array of ethnic backgrounds. Apart from children born within the country, there were also applicants originally from Switzerland, Belgium, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and China, reflecting the multiculturalism that makes up Vancouver. The Hong Kong reality series Chef Corner Jr. is not only a hit in Vancouver, but in Calgary as well, as one of the applicants especially flew over to Vancouver to participate in the interview.
Applicants and their parents were confronted by the judging panel composed of Fairchild TV’s Sales and Marketing Controller, Helen Lee, renowned program host, Delon Lew, and Senior Producer, Leo So. Through casual conversation, the judges were able to better understand each child’s passion and interest in cooking while testing their initiatives and ability to engage in conversation. Many parents also prepared videos of the children cooking and photos of their completed dishes for the judges to further examine. The applicants not only showed off a variety of desserts such as cookies, cake, pudding, and even soufflés, but also fried, steamed, and baked dishes as well. Even preparing for a full course dinner was not a challenge for these talented children! The majority garnered an interest in cooking beginning at the age of 6 or 7 and have since learned by watching family members cook in the kitchen or looking up recipes on the Internet. One applicant showed a cake that appeared plain on the outside, but revealed a panda decoration on the inside! Another applicant was inspired by the TVB drama Swipe Tap Love to create her own recipe for glass cookies. The families of the applicants were very supportive of the children’s interest in cooking, commenting that it is another life skill that teaches them to be independent as well. Even more interesting was when the judges asked the children whether they learned to cook from their mothers, a number of children replied that their mothers’ cooking was only average, thus sparking an incentive for them to cook a better meal for themselves.
The judges were impressed by how passionate the children were and the level of skills each of them demonstrates. The lucky few talented junior chefs that were selected to participate in the cooking audition taking place on June 8th must work hard to reveal their true skills and talents to win a chance into the Chef Corner Jr. Vancouver Final. The finalists will soon be putting on their Chef Corner Jr. uniforms to meet with the public and show off their talent!

The newly elected British Columbia New Democratic Party (BCNDP) leader John Horgan, in a recent interview with Fairchild TV, expressed his views on his leadership style and the party’s direction. Mr. Horgan mentioned quite a few times that he will take a balanced approach between BC’s economic growth and environmental protection. When being asked about his party’s loss in the previous provincial election, Horgan admitted that inability to point out the Liberal government’s failure and to realize his party members’ potential were the reasons behind. He promised that the NDP is committed to monitoring the Liberal government and helping party members to reach their full potential. On the issue of liquefied natural gas (LNG), while he agreed that BC should develop the LNG sector, he did not think the current LNG development is as robust as Premier Christy Clark claims to be. He further argued that the government should not put all eggs into one basket but rather take a balanced approach to let other industries develop.

Throughout the years, Fairchild TV has made an effort to fully contribute to society and engage in community works. This past Easter weekend, Miss Chinese Vancouver and 2nd Runner-up of Miss Chinese International, Cindy Zhong and newly titled Super 10 Champion Claudia Jen volunteered at the annual Easter lunch provided by the Union Gospel Mission to the residents of Vancouver downtown eastside. Cindy and Claudia spent an entire afternoon working there while the residents were fully enjoying their plentiful meal. As a flight attendant, Claudia has much experience in service and cheerfully commented that this type of work comes naturally to her. Fairchild TV has the honor to invite evergreen artiste William Hu from Hong Kong as the special guest performer and judge for this exciting battle. William started his career at the age of 15 as a finalist at the first Hong Kong New Talent Singing Awards 30 years ago. Standing at 6’2”, handsome and charismatic William has always been tremendously supported by fans in Hong Kong, especially during the days as a member of Little Tiger Group. He was one of the first hosts of Hong Kong MTV program ‘Can’t Stop the Music’ and ‘Sunday Song Request’ while acting in television dramas and movies. Since then, William has actively engaged himself in charity works and was appointed as the ambassador for Caritas Hong Kong from year 2007-2010. In 2012 William held a concert in Hong Kong and released an album in which he covered golden oldies from popular female singers, followed by another album, the title song of which ‘Playful Child’ was dedicated to his parents who acted like playful children because of dementia.
When William entered onto the press conference stage, he was welcome by passionate cheers and applause. He told MC Mandy Chan that he rushed to Vancouver after recently wrapping up a TVB drama as Officer Geomancer. Even so, he expressed his excitement for his first time performance in Vancouver and invited fans to look forward to enjoying both new songs and golden oldies on Sunday. William has always been enthusiastic about cooking, thus is anticipating trying out the gourmet cuisine in Vancouver. This year, Fairchild TV continues to provide an opportunity for other Golden Voice singers to participate. With no restrictions on ethnicity, language, or song selections, ‘Golden Voice: The Final Challenge’ accepted applications from contestants over the age of 30 who have a passion for music. Cindy brought back delicacies from Shanghai to share with the media while she chatted about her experiences during the international pageant and her thoughts on winning the 1st Runner Up title. Cindy first expressed her gratitude to Fairchild TV for providing her with a solid foundation in preparation for the Miss Chinese International Pageant. She attributed her excellent performance to all the professional sessions she had received during the three-month training period for the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant. Of course, Cindy had done her homework by consulting Miss Chinese Vancouver 2012 and Miss Chinese International 2013, Gloria Tang, plus reviewing footage from past Miss Chinese International Pageants. To further prepare herself for the pageant, Cindy returned to Shanghai two weeks early to adjust to the time difference and pick up and practice her pipa. Cindy’s talent segment for the pageant was to be an elegant performance of song and pipa. Unfortunately, on the day of the show, while a staff member was moving her pipa after the final rehearsal, the pipa was broken, causing Cindy to have to change her talent at the very last minute. However, Cindy’s performance of ‘Flower Woman’ by Anita Mui was still beautiful and moving, even without the accompaniment of the pipa. To thank all her supporters, Cindy wowed the media with her pipa skills as she played the music instrument for the first time in Vancouver during the media meet up. When asked which part of the pageant she was most satisfied with, Cindy answered that it was the swimwear segment. Not only was Cindy able to show off her perfectly fit body, she also let the audience know how intelligent and smart she was while answering the MC’s questions. When MC of the evening Eric Tsang found out that Cindy joined the pageant to fulfill her mother’s wishes, Eric challenged Cindy with the question of whether Cindy felt her mother was more beautiful than herself. Quick-witted Cindy skillfully replied with a positive answer because all of Cindy’s own beauty, grace, and intelligence were inherited from her mother, winning applause from all the audience.
Although Cindy was one of the hot contenders of the competition, she expressed that she was not disappointed by not winning the champion title but felt very honored to take part in the challenge. Furthermore, Cindy shared that during her short two-week stay in Hong Kong she had gained a number of fans who had pleasantly surprised her with gifts, and gathered to say goodbye to her at the airport. With such great popularity, of course the media was curious to know about Cindy’s future plans and whether she would follow her predecessor Gloria’s footsteps by entering into the Hong Kong entertainment industry. Cindy wishes to spend some time discussing her future plans with her family, but is looking forward to taking on the responsibilities of Miss Chinese Vancouver and giving back to the society. Cindy will also appear in What’s On, Leisure Talk, and City Chat to share her pageant experiences.
